Step 1: Sign in to your Gmail account
If you don’t have a Gmail account, create one by visiting the Gmail website and clicking on “Create account.” Once you have an account, sign in to Gmail using your credentials.
Step 2: Go to Gmail settings
Once you’ve signed in to your Gmail account, click on the gear icon located in the top right corner of your inbox. From the dropdown menu, select “Settings.”
Step 3: Set Gmail as the default email handler in Chrome
If you use Google Chrome as your web browser, you can easily set Gmail as your default email service:
- Open Google Chrome and type “chrome://settings” in the address bar.
- Scroll down and click on “Advanced” to expand the advanced settings.
- Under the “Privacy and security” section, click on “Site settings.”
- Scroll down and click on “Handlers.”
- Toggle the switch next to “Allow sites to ask to become default handlers for protocols” to enable it.
- Go back to the Gmail tab, and you should see a dialog box asking if you want to allow Gmail to open all email links. Click “Allow.”
Step 4: Set Gmail as the default email handler in Firefox
If you prefer using Firefox as your web browser, you can follow these steps to set Gmail as your default email service:
- Open Firefox and click on the menu icon (three horizontal lines) in the top right corner.
- From the dropdown menu, select “Options.”
- In the left-hand menu, click on “General.”
- Scroll down to the “Applications” section.
- In the search bar, type “mailto” to find the “mailto” content type.
- Next to “mailto,” select “Use Gmail” from the dropdown menu.
Step 5: Test your new default email settings
To ensure that Gmail is now set as your default email service, try clicking on an email link on a website or a document. Gmail should automatically open, with the recipient’s email address pre-filled in the compose window.
