What do you need?
- Baby bathtub or sink
- Warm water (around 2-3 inches)
- Mild baby soap or cleanser
- Soft washcloth or sponge
- Baby towel
- Clean diaper
- Change of clothes
- Baby lotion (optional)
Step 1: Be Prepared
Before starting the bath, ensure that everything you need is within reach. Fill the tub or sink with warm water to a safe level, approximately 2-3 inches. Check the water temperature with your elbow or a bath thermometer to ensure it is comfortably warm, around 100°F (37.7°C).
Step 2: Undress and Wrap Your Baby
Lay out a clean towel near the tub or sink. Undress your baby, leaving only the diaper on. Wrap your little one in a towel, exposing only the body parts you are currently washing. This helps keep them warm and secure while minimizing exposure to chilly air.
Step 3: Support Your Baby’s Head
Gently cradle your baby’s head and neck with one hand, using your arm to support their body. Keep a firm grip during the entire bath to ensure their safety and comfort.
Step 4: Begin Washing
Dip the washcloth or sponge into the warm water and gently wipe your baby’s face, starting from the center and moving outwards. Use a different part of the cloth for each swipe to avoid spreading dirt or irritants. Be extra careful around the eyes, nose, and mouth.
Next, clean the rest of their body using mild soap or cleanser. Pay attention to the folds in the skin, such as the neck, armpits, and thighs, as these areas tend to accumulate sweat and dirt. Use gentle strokes and always support their limbs.
Step 5: Rinse and Dry
Once you have finished washing, gently pour warm water over your baby’s body using a cup or your hand. Make sure to remove all soap residue to prevent any skin irritation. Lift your baby out of the water, making sure to support their head and neck, and immediately wrap them in a dry towel.
Pat them dry softly, paying extra attention to the creases and folds of their skin. Ensure that your baby is completely dry before putting on a clean diaper and dressing them in a fresh set of clothes.
Step 6: Optional Step – Moisturize
If your baby’s skin tends to be dry, you can gently apply a baby lotion or moisturizer after the bath. Remember to choose a product that is specifically formulated for newborns and free from any harsh chemicals or fragrances.
Bathing your newborn can be an enjoyable bonding experience when done safely. By following these step-by-step instructions, you can create a comfortable and soothing bath time routine for both you and your little one. Remember, always prioritize their safety and never leave them unattended during the bath. Happy bathing!
