Step 1: Gather Your Materials
Before you get started, you’ll want to make sure that you have all the necessary materials on hand. You’ll need a new knob (of course), a screwdriver, and possibly a set of pliers or a drill. If your new knob requires a new latch or strike plate, you’ll need those as well.
Step 2: Remove the Old Knob
The first step is to remove the old knob. Start by unscrewing the screws on the faceplate of the knob on one side of the door. Once the screws are removed, the knob should easily slide out of the door. If the knob is adhered to the door, you may have to use a flathead screwdriver to pry it off.
Step 3: Remove the Latch
In most cases, you’ll also need to remove the latch from the door. To do this, locate the screws on the edge of the door that hold the latch in place. These screws may be covered by a faceplate or a metal plate, so you’ll need to remove these first. Once the screws are removed, slide the latch out of the door.
Step 4: Install the New Latch (if necessary)
If your new knob comes with a new latch, you’ll need to install this before moving on to the next step. The new latch should slide into the same hole that the old latch came out of. Use the same screws to secure the new latch.
Step 5: Install the New Knob
Now it’s time to install the new knob. Start by sliding the spindle (the metal rod that connects the two knobs) through the latch hole in the door. Then, slide one knob onto the spindle and insert the screws to hold it in place. Use a level to make sure that the knob is straight before tightening the screws.
Next, slide the other knob onto the spindle and insert the screws. Again, make sure that the knob is level before tightening the screws. If your new knob has a faceplate, attach this now. In some cases, you may need to use pliers or a drill to tighten the screws if they’re in a tight spot.
Step 6: Test the New Knob
Finally, test the new knob to make sure that it’s working properly. Turn the knob to make sure that the latch is engaging and that the door is closing properly. If everything looks good, you’re all set!
