What supplies do you need?
Before you start cleaning your newborn’s bottom, gather the necessary supplies:
- Diapers
- Wipes or lukewarm water
- Cotton balls or soft washcloths
- Dry cloth or towel
- Diaper cream or ointment (optional)
Step-by-step guide to cleaning your newborn’s bottom:
Step 1: Prepare the changing area
Find a clean, flat surface to lay your baby down during the diaper change. Ensure the area is safe and secure, and keep all the supplies within reach.
Step 2: Remove the dirty diaper
Carefully undo the tabs on the dirty diaper without pulling it away completely. Use the front part of the diaper to gently wipe off any excess stool (if any) onto the rest of the diaper. Fold the dirty diaper closed so it doesn’t touch your baby’s skin.
Step 3: Cleanse your baby’s bottom
If using wipes, take a wipe and gently clean your baby’s bottom by wiping from front to back. Pay extra attention to the folds and creases. If using lukewarm water, dampen a cotton ball or soft washcloth and gently wipe your baby’s bottom, ensuring all areas are thoroughly cleaned.
Step 4: Dry your baby’s bottom
Using a soft cloth or towel, pat your baby’s bottom dry. Avoid rubbing, as it may cause irritation. Make sure the area is completely dry before putting on a new diaper.
Step 5: Apply diaper cream (if necessary)
If your baby’s bottom appears red or irritated, you may consider applying a thin layer of diaper cream or ointment to create a barrier between the skin and moisture. Consult your pediatrician for recommended products.
Step 6: Put on a clean diaper
Open a fresh diaper and slide it under your baby, making sure the back part is higher than the front. Fasten the tabs snugly but not too tight, allowing room for your baby’s comfort and movement.
Step 7: Dispose of the dirty diaper
Wrap the dirty diaper, including any wipes, securely and dispose of it properly in a diaper pail or sealed bag.
Following these steps will help you properly clean your newborn’s bottom during diaper changes. Always remember to wash your hands both before and after changing your baby’s diaper to maintain hygiene. With time, you’ll become more confident and efficient in performing this essential parental task!
