What You’ll Need
- 2/3 cup of rubbing alcohol (99% isopropyl alcohol)
- 1/3 cup of aloe vera gel (pure or with minimal additives)
- 10 drops of essential oil (optional for fragrance)
- A mixing bowl
- A spoon for stirring
- A funnel
- A small empty bottle with a dispensing cap
Step 1: Measure the Ingredients
Start by measuring 2/3 cup of rubbing alcohol and pour it into the mixing bowl. Ensure that you use at least 99% isopropyl alcohol to guarantee its effectiveness against germs.
Step 2: Add Aloe Vera Gel
Add 1/3 cup of aloe vera gel to the mixing bowl. Using pure aloe vera gel is recommended as it helps moisturize your hands. If you prefer scented hand sanitizer, choose aloe vera gel with minimal additives to avoid irritation.
Step 3: Incorporate Essential Oil (Optional)
If you prefer scented hand sanitizer, add around 10 drops of your favorite essential oil to the mixture. Essential oils such as tea tree, lavender, or eucalyptus not only add a pleasant scent but also offer some antimicrobial properties. Stir everything together until well combined.
Step 4: Transfer to a Bottle
Using a funnel, carefully transfer the hand sanitizer mixture into a small empty bottle with a dispensing cap. This will ensure convenient usage and portability. Make sure to seal the bottle tightly to prevent any leakage.
Step 5: Label the Bottle
Finally, label the bottle with a clear and legible description, indicating that it is hand sanitizer. This will prevent any confusion and ensure that it is easily identifiable.
Using Your Homemade Hand Sanitizer
Apply a generous amount of the hand sanitizer to the palm of your hand. Rub your hands together, covering all surfaces, for at least 20 seconds. Pay extra attention to the areas between your fingers and around your nails. Let it air dry completely.
Remember, hand sanitizers are effective when soap and water are not available. However, it is always recommended to wash your hands with soap and water whenever possible.
Stay safe and protect yourself and others by practicing good hand hygiene!
