Objectives
The objective of Monopoly is to become the wealthiest player by the end of the game. Players achieve this by buying properties and charging rent when other players land on them. The game ends when one player has accumulated so much wealth that they have effectively bankrupted all the other players.
Equipment
A Monopoly board
Two to six players
Tokens for each player
A pair of dice
Property cards
Money in varying denominations
Houses and hotels
Setting Up
To set up Monopoly, the board should be laid out on a flat surface and each player chooses a token. The players must then decide on who goes first, which can be done by rolling a dice or deciding among themselves. Each player is given $1500, which is divided into various denominations.
Gameplay
Starting with the first player, they roll the dice and move their token the number of spaces indicated on the dice. The space that the player lands on determines what happens next. If it’s a property, the player can choose to buy it, if they can afford it. If they choose not to buy, the property goes up for auction and is sold to the highest bidder.
If a player lands on a property owned by another player, they must pay rent to the owner. The amount of rent is determined by the type and number of properties the owner holds. Rent amounts increase as the number of houses and hotels on the property increase.
Players can also draw Chance and Community Chest cards, which can offer a reward or punishment. These cards can have a significant impact on the game, so it’s important to read them carefully.
Building houses and hotels on properties increases the rent amount that other players must pay when they land on the property. Players can also mortgage their properties to raise money. However, mortgaged properties cannot be used to collect rent.
Players can also trade properties with each other by negotiating with one another. This can be a vital strategy for winning the game, as it can help players to collect sets of properties which can generate significant income.
Winning
The game ends when one player has bankrupted all others, making them the winner. This player will have accumulated significant wealth by owning the most properties and collecting the most rent.
Tips
– Keep a track of your money, and do not overspend.
