Step 1: Open the Messenger App
To delete messages on Messenger, start by opening the app on your device. You can find the Messenger app on your home screen or in the app drawer.
Step 2: Select the Conversation
Once you’re in the app, navigate to the conversation containing the messages you want to delete. Tap on the conversation to open it.
Step 3: Delete Individual Messages
To delete individual messages, tap and hold on the message you want to remove. A menu will appear with various options. Select the “Delete” option to permanently delete the message. Remember, this will only delete the message on your end and will still be visible to the other person.
Step 4: Delete an Entire Conversation
If you want to delete an entire conversation, go back to the main page of the Messenger app. Press and hold on the conversation you want to remove until a menu appears. From the menu, select the “Delete” option to permanently delete the entire conversation. This action will remove all messages within the conversation as well.
Step 5: Clear All Messages
If you want to clear all messages from the Messenger app, there is an option to do so in the settings. Open the Messenger app and tap on your profile picture in the top left corner. Scroll down to find “Settings & Privacy” and tap on it. Then, select “Storage” and click on “Clear All Cached Files.” This will remove all messages and media files from the Messenger app on your device.
Step 6: Archiving Messages
Alternatively, if you don’t want to permanently delete messages but want to remove them from your main inbox, you can archive them. To archive a conversation, swipe left on it and tap on the folder icon. After archiving, the conversation will be moved to the “Archived” folder and won’t be visible in the main inbox. You can still access the archived messages by searching for the person’s name in Messenger.
Be Mindful of Deleted Messages
It’s important to note that deleting messages on your end will only remove them from your device. The messages may still be stored on the other person’s device or Facebook’s servers. This means that the other person may still have access to the messages, and Facebook may retain them in their servers according to their data retention policies.
- Deleting individual messages: Tap and hold on the message, then select “Delete.”
- Deleting entire conversations: Press and hold on the conversation, then select “Delete.”
- Clearing all messages: Go to “Settings & Privacy” > “Storage” > “Clear All Cached Files.”
- Archiving conversations: Swipe left on the conversation, then tap on the folder icon.
Remember to think twice before deleting any messages, especially if they contain important information. While you can delete them from your device, you cannot control whether others have already seen or stored the messages. Use this feature mindfully and only delete messages when absolutely necessary.
That’s it! Now you know how to permanently delete messages on Messenger. Keep your conversations tidy and free up some storage space with these simple steps!
