Step 1: Ihram
The first step in performing the Hajj is to enter the state of Ihram. Ihram is a sacred state of purity that one must enter before starting the Hajj. It involves wearing white clothing and reciting the intention to perform the Hajj. This can be done at any point before entering the Miqat, the designated boundary of the holy land.
Step 2: Arrival in Mecca
Once you have entered the state of Ihram, you will make your way to Mecca. This is where the actual Hajj will take place. Upon arrival in Mecca, you will perform the Tawaf, which involves circling the Kaaba seven times while reciting certain verses from the Quran.
Step 3: Sa’i
After completing Tawaf, you will perform Sa’i, which involves running or walking between the hills of Safa and Marwa seven times. This ritual commemorates the story of Hajar, who ran between these hills in search of water for her son Ismail.
Step 4: Stay in Mina
After completing the Sa’i, you will travel to the nearby town of Mina. Here, you will spend the night in tents and perform prayers. This is also the place where pilgrims will gather before heading towards Arafat.
Step 5: Arafat
On the ninth day of Dhul-Hijjah, you will make your way to Arafat, a large open plain about 20 kilometers east of Mecca. This is considered the most important part of the Hajj. Here, you will spend the day in intense prayer, seeking forgiveness and asking for guidance from Allah.
Step 6: Muzdalifah
After sunset on the ninth day, you will make your way to Muzdalifah, a small valley between Arafat and Mina. Here, you will spend the night in the open under the stars, collecting pebbles for the next day’s ritual known as the “stoning of the devil”.
Step 7: Stoning of the devil
On the tenth day of Dhul-Hijjah, you will return to Mina to perform the “stoning of the devil”. This involves throwing seven pebbles at three pillars, which symbolize Satan’s temptation of Prophet Ibrahim.
Step 8: Animal sacrifice
After completing the stoning ritual, you will perform the animal sacrifice. This involves slaughtering a sheep, goat or cow, and distributing the meat to people in need.
Step 9: Tawaf al-Ifadah
Once you have performed the animal sacrifice, you will return to Mecca to perform Tawaf al-Ifadah, which is similar to the Tawaf performed on the first day of the Hajj.
Step 10: Final days in Mina
After completing Tawaf al-Ifadah, you will return to Mina for the next two to three days. Here, you will perform more stoning rituals and prayers before returning to Mecca to complete the Hajj.
Performing the Hajj is an incredibly spiritual and life-changing experience for Muslims. However, it can also be physically and emotionally challenging. That’s why it’s important to prepare yourself both mentally and physically before embarking on this journey. Keep in mind that the Hajj is not just about fulfilling a religious obligation, but also about seeking a closer relationship with Allah and being in unity with fellow Muslims from all over the world. May Allah guide and bless us all as we perform this sacred pilgrimage.
