What is desalination?
Desalination is the process of removing salt and other minerals from seawater, making it suitable for drinking or irrigation purposes. It is an important technique to alleviate water scarcity in coastal areas where freshwater resources are limited.
Methods of Desalination:
1. Reverse Osmosis (RO):

Each stage operates at a lower pressure than the previous one, allowing for multiple evaporation and condensation cycles. The heat from the condensed vapor is used to heat the next stage, reducing energy consumption.
4. Electrodialysis (ED):
Electrodialysis relies on an electric field to remove salt ions from seawater. It involves passing seawater between anodes and cathodes, separated by ion-exchange membranes. The membranes selectively allow positive or negative ions to pass through, effectively removing salt and other impurities from the water.
5. Solar Desalination:
Solar desalination harnesses the power of the sun to generate freshwater from seawater. There are various solar desalination techniques, including solar stills and solar-powered reverse osmosis. These methods use solar energy to heat and evaporate the seawater, leaving behind salt and other contaminants.
Desalination offers a promising solution to address water scarcity in coastal regions.
