1. Take Accurate Measurements
Before starting your pants project, it is important to take accurate measurements of the person who will be wearing the pants. Use a measuring tape to measure the waist, hips, inseam, and length from the waist to the ankle. Write down these measurements on a piece of paper and keep them handy as you work on the pants.
2. Choose Your Fabric
Now that you have your measurements, it is time to choose your fabric. Select a fabric that is comfortable to wear and has some stretch. Look for twill, denim, or cotton blends. Remember to wash and dry your fabric before sewing, as it may shrink in the wash.
3. Cut Your Fabric
To create the pants, the fabric will need to be cut into several pieces. Start by cutting two rectangles that are the length of the pants plus 2 inches and the width of the hips plus 2 inches. Next, cut two rectangles that are the length of the inseam plus 1 inch and the width of the hips. Finally, cut a waistband that is the length of the waist measurement plus 2 inches and the width of your choice.
4. Sew the Legs
Take the two rectangles that were cut for the legs and fold them in half with the right sides facing each other. Pin along the inseam and sew a straight seam from the crotch to the ankle. Repeat on the other leg.
5. Create the Waistband
Fold the waistband in half with the right sides facing each other. Pin along the long edge and sew a straight seam. Fold the waistband in half again with the wrong sides facing each other, creating a long strip of fabric.
6. Sew the Legs to the Waistband
Take one of the legs and turn it right side out. Take the waistband and wrap it around the top of the leg with the right sides facing each other. Pin in place and sew a straight seam. Repeat with the other leg.
7. Sew the Inseam
Take the two pieces of fabric that were cut for the inseam and fold them in half with the right sides facing each other. Pin along the inseam and sew a straight seam from the crotch to the bottom of the leg. Repeat on the other leg.
8. Attach the Waistband
Fold the waistband over the top of the pants, with the wrong side facing out and the raw edges aligned. Pin in place and sew a straight seam, leaving a small opening for inserting elastic. Thread elastic through the waistband using a safety pin and sew the ends of the elastic together. Sew up the opening in the waistband.
9. Hem the Pants
Finally, hem the pants to the desired length. Fold the raw edge of the fabric up 1 inch and then another inch and pin in place. Sew a straight seam around the bottom of each leg.
By following these steps, you can make a pair of pants without a pattern. Remember to take accurate measurements, choose a comfortable fabric, and take your time with each step. With a little practice, you may find that making pants without a pattern is a fun and easy sewing project.
