Materials You’ll Need
- Elastic (choose a width of your preference)
- Measuring tape
- Fabric scissors
- Sewing machine or needle and thread
Step 1: Measure the Elastic
Start by measuring the distance from one corner of your mattress to the opposite corner where you want the elastic to go. Add a couple of extra inches to this measurement to provide some tension for a secure fit.
Step 2: Cut the Elastic
Using your fabric scissors, cut the elastic to match the measurement you took in the previous step.
Step 3: Sew the Elastic
Now, it’s time to secure the elastic onto the fitted sheet. Locate the corner of the sheet where you want to attach the elastic and fold it over about 1 inch. This will create a casing for the elastic.
Using a sewing machine or a needle and thread, sew along the folded edge, leaving a small opening to insert the elastic.
Step 4: Thread the Elastic
Attach a safety pin or a bodkin to one end of the elastic and insert it through the opening you left in the casing. Thread the elastic through the casing until it has been completely inserted.
Step 5: Secure the Elastic
With both ends of the elastic now out of the casing, overlap them by a few inches. Use a zigzag stitch or a simple straight stitch to secure the two ends together.
Step 6: Close the Casing
Once the elastic is secured, carefully sew the opening in the casing shut. Make sure to reinforce the stitching to prevent it from unraveling.
Step 7: Repeat for Remaining Corners
Follow steps 3 to 6 for each corner of the fitted sheet to ensure all corners have elastic securely attached.
Step 8: Test the Snug Fit
Finally, place the fitted sheet onto your mattress and check that each corner hugs tightly around the mattress. Adjust the tension of the elastic if needed to achieve the desired snugness.
By following these steps, you can easily make fitted sheet corners with elastic and bid farewell to any more frustrating sheet mishaps. Enjoy a consistently neat and tidy bed that stays in place throughout the night!
