Ironing clothes is an essential part of our daily routines, and using in your iron can significantly improve its performance and longevity. Distilled water is free from impurities like minerals and chemicals, which can cause build-up and clog the iron’s steam vents. If you want to make distilled water for your iron at home, follow these simple steps:
1. Collect the necessary equipment:
– A large pot with a lid
– A heat-resistant glass bowl
– Ice cubes or a cooling rack
– Heat-resistant gloves
– A glass bottle or container to store the distilled water
– A stove or a hotplate
2. Fill the large pot with tap water:
Start by filling the pot with tap water, making sure not to overfill it. Keep in mind that the water level should be below the glass bowl’s rim when placed inside the pot.
3. Place the glass bowl in the pot:
Take the heat-resistant glass bowl and place it in the center of the pot. The bowl should float in the water without touching the pot’s bottom.
4. Cover the pot with the lid:
Cover the pot with the lid, making sure it fits tightly. This will help capture the steam during the distillation process.
5. Heat the pot:
Turn on the stove or hotplate to medium-high heat and bring the water to a gentle boil. Once the water starts boiling, reduce the heat slightly to maintain a steady simmer.
6. Create condensation:
As the water inside the pot boils, it will generate steam. The steam will rise and come into contact with the cold underside of the lid, condensing into droplets. The droplets will then drip into the glass bowl, creating distilled water.
7. Collect the distilled water:
After simmering for about 20-30 minutes, turn off the heat and carefully remove the pot from the stove. Use heat-resistant gloves to avoid burns. Lift the lid of the pot, making sure to keep it away from your face to prevent any steam burns. Set the lid aside.
8. Allow the distilled water to cool:
Let the distilled water cool down in the glass bowl for a few minutes. To accelerate the cooling process, you can place the glass bowl on a cooling rack or add a few ice cubes directly into the water.
9. Pour the distilled water into a clean container:
Using a heat-resistant funnel, transfer the cooled distilled water from the glass bowl into a glass bottle or any clean container of your choice. Make sure the container is tightly sealed to prevent any contamination.
10. Store the distilled water:
Place the container in a cool and dry location away from direct sunlight. It is recommended to use the distilled water within a week for optimal freshness.
By following these steps, you can easily produce distilled water at home for use in your iron. Remember that using distilled water in your iron will minimize the risk of clogging and prolong its lifespan, ensuring wrinkle-free clothes with every use.
