Ingredients:
- 3 pounds of pork shoulder or butt, cut into chunks
- 4 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 onion, diced
- 1 orange, juiced
- 2 limes, juiced
- 1 tablespoon of chili powder
- 1 teaspoon of cumin
- 1 teaspoon of oregano
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup of chicken broth
- 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
Instructions:
Step 1: Season the pork with salt, pepper, chili powder, cumin, and oregano. Make sure all the pieces are well coated.
Step 2: In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add the pork pieces and sear them on all sides until browned. This will help give the carnitas a nice crispy texture.
Step 3: Add the minced garlic and diced onion to the pot and sauté until fragrant and translucent.
Step 4: Pour in the orange juice, lime juice, and chicken broth. Stir well to combine all the flavors.
Step 5: Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the pot and let it simmer for about 2-3 hours, or until the pork is tender and easily pulls apart with a fork.
Step 6: Once the pork is cooked, remove it from the pot and shred it into smaller pieces using two forks. Discard any excess fat.
Step 7: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Place the shredded pork on a baking sheet and drizzle some of the cooking liquid over it.
Step 8: Place the baking sheet in the oven and cook for about 10-15 minutes, or until the edges of the pork turn crispy and brown.
Step 9: Remove the pork carnitas from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes before serving.
Step 10: Serve the pork carnitas with warm tortillas, fresh salsa, guacamole, and your favorite toppings.
Enjoy your homemade delicious pork carnitas!
Pro tip: For an extra flavor boost, marinate the pork in the seasoning mixture overnight before cooking. This will infuse the meat with even more deliciousness.
