Gather Your Ingredients
Before you start making candy canes, make sure you have all the necessary ingredients. Here’s what you’ll need:
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 cup light corn syrup
- ½ cup water
- ½ teaspoon peppermint extract
- Red food coloring
- Confectioners’ sugar (for dusting)
Mixing and Kneading
To begin, combine the granulated sugar, corn syrup, and water in a saucepan. Heat the mixture over medium-high heat until the sugar dissolves completely. Once dissolved, insert a candy thermometer into the mixture and bring it to a boil without stirring. Wait until the thermometer reads 290°F (143°C).
Remove the saucepan from heat and let it cool for a couple of minutes. Add the peppermint extract and mix well. Divide the mixture into two equal parts and add a few drops of red food coloring to one part. Knead each portion until the color is even.
Forming the Candy Canes
Dust your working surface with confectioners’ sugar to prevent sticking. Roll out each colored portion into long ropes, approximately ½ inch in diameter. Make sure both ropes are the same length.
Place the two ropes side by side and gently twist them together, creating a spiral pattern. Carefully shape the twisted ropes into the iconic candy cane shape, bending one end to form the hook. Repeat the process with the remaining dough.
Let Them Cool and Harden
Once you’ve formed the candy canes, let them cool and harden at room temperature for at least 1 hour. This process ensures that the candy canes maintain their shape and texture.
Enjoy Your Homemade Candy Canes
Now that your candy canes have cooled and hardened, they are ready to be enjoyed! Hang them on your Christmas tree, use them as festive decorations, or simply indulge in their sweet peppermint flavor. You can also wrap them in cellophane to give as homemade gifts to friends and family.
Remember, making candy canes from scratch may take some practice, but the joy of creating something delicious from simple ingredients is incredibly rewarding. Get creative with different flavors and colors to make your candy canes truly unique. Happy stick-making!
