Materials you will need
- Fabric (choose one that is lightweight and flowy)
- Elastic (1 inch wide)
- Matching thread
- Measuring tape
- Pins
- Scissors
- Sewing machine
Step 1: Take your measurements
Before you start cutting the fabric, it’s important to take your measurements accurately. Use a measuring tape to measure your waist, hips, and desired skirt length. Write down these measurements as you will need them later.
Step 2: Cut the fabric
Now it’s time to cut the fabric for your wrap skirt. Start by cutting a rectangle with a width of your waist measurement plus 2 inches and a length of your desired skirt length plus 2 inches. This will be the main body of your skirt. Then, cut two more rectangles with a width of your hip measurement plus 4 inches and a length of your desired skirt length plus 2 inches. These will be the ties for your wrap skirt.
Step 3: Sew the ties
Take one of the tie rectangles and fold it in half lengthwise with the right sides facing each other. Pin along the long edge and sew using a ¼ inch seam allowance. Repeat this step for the second tie. Then, turn them right side out and press with an iron.
Step 4: Attach the ties to the body
Lay out the main body of your skirt and place the ties at the top corners, aligning them with the raw edges. Make sure to leave a small overlap on one side of the main body. Pin the ties in place and sew them securely.
Step 5: Create the waistband
To create the waistband, fold down the top edge of the main body fabric by 1 inch and press with an iron. Then, fold it down another 1 inch and press again. Pin the folded edge in place and sew along the bottom edge, leaving a small opening to insert the elastic.
Step 6: Insert the elastic
Measure and cut a piece of elastic that fits snugly around your waist. Attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic and thread it through the waistband opening. Once the elastic is all the way through, overlap the ends by ½ inch and sew them together securely. Then, sew the opening closed.
Step 7: Hem the skirt
The final step is to hem the bottom edge of your wrap skirt. Fold up the raw edge by ¼ inch and press. Then, fold it up again by 1 inch and press. Pin the hem in place and sew along the top edge of the fold.
Congratulations! You have successfully created your own stylish wrap skirt. This versatile garment can be worn in various ways to suit your personal style. Have fun experimenting with different fabrics and patterns to make more wrap skirts for your wardrobe. Happy sewing!
