Gathering the Supplies
The first step in any sewing project is to gather all the necessary supplies. Here’s a list of items you’ll need:
- Fabric (choose a lightweight fabric with a good drape for the best results)
- Elastic (for the waistband)
- Matching thread
- Pins
- Scissors
- Sewing machine
Measuring and Cutting the Fabric
Start by measuring your waist and hips to determine the length of your skirt. Add a few inches to allow for seam allowances and ease. Using these measurements, cut two rectangular panels of fabric. The width of each panel should be half of your hip measurement plus seam allowances, and the length should be your desired skirt length plus seam allowances.
Next, cut a separate strip of fabric for the waistband. The width should be slightly smaller than the width of your elastic, and the length should be your waist measurement plus seam allowances.
Assembling the Skirt
Place the two fabric panels right sides together and pin along the side seams. Sew the side seams, leaving the top open for the waistband. Finish the raw edges with a zigzag stitch or serger for a clean finish.
Now it’s time to attach the waistband. Fold the waistband strip in half lengthwise, with the wrong sides together, and press. Pin the raw edge of the waistband to the raw edge of the skirt’s top opening, aligning the side seams. Sew along the edge, leaving a small opening to insert the elastic.
Cut a piece of elastic to fit comfortably around your waist. Attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic and thread it through the waistband casing. Once both ends of the elastic meet, sew them securely together and close the opening in the waistband.
Finishing Touches
Lastly, try on your trapeze skirt and make any necessary adjustments to the length or fit. Hem the bottom of the skirt by folding the raw edge twice and sewing it in place. Give the skirt a final press to remove any wrinkles, and voila, your trapeze skirt is complete!
Now that you have mastered the art of making a trapeze skirt, the possibilities are endless. Experiment with different fabrics, patterns, and lengths to create a wardrobe full of unique skirts. Enjoy the creative process and happy sewing!
