Gather Your Materials
- Foam pad
- Waterproof fabric
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Sewing machine (or needle and thread)
- Elastic band
- Sewing pins
Step 1: Measure and Cut the Foam Pad
Take your foam pad and measure the desired size for your kneeler. Typically, a kneeler measuring around 12 inches wide by 18 inches long works well. Use your scissors to cut the foam pad to the measured dimensions.
Step 2: Cut the Fabric
Using the measurements of the foam pad as a guide, cut two pieces of waterproof fabric that are slightly larger than the dimensions of the foam pad. This will allow for seam allowances.
Step 3: Sew the Fabric
Place the two pieces of fabric together with the right sides facing each other. Use sewing pins to secure the edges. Sew around the edges, leaving a small opening on one side. This opening will be used to turn the fabric right side out and insert the foam pad.
Step 4: Insert the Foam Pad
Turn the fabric right side out through the opening. Take the foam pad and carefully slide it into the fabric pocket you have created. Make sure the foam pad fits snugly and reaches all corners of the fabric pocket.
Step 5: Close the Opening
After inserting the foam pad, fold the edges of the fabric at the opening and sew it closed using a hand needle and thread. Ensure that the stitches are secure and that the foam pad is completely enclosed within the fabric.
Step 6: Attach the Elastic Band
Measure and cut a piece of elastic band, approximately 10 inches long. Sew the ends of the elastic band to the corners of one of the shorter sides of the kneeler. This will allow you to easily roll up and secure your kneeler when not in use.
Step 7: Test Your Kneeler
Once you have completed all the steps, test your homemade kneeler for comfort and functionality. Place it on the ground or use it in your preferred kneeling position. Ensure that it provides sufficient cushioning and stays in place while in use.
Congratulations! You have successfully created your own DIY kneeler. Now you can enjoy comfortable gardening or housework without straining your knees.
Remember, making a kneeler is a fun and customizable project. Feel free to experiment with different fabrics, sizes, or additional features to suit your needs. Happy gardening!
