Gather Your Materials
Before you begin, gather the following materials:
- Black construction paper or cardstock
- Scissors
- Glue or tape
- A ruler
- A compass or circular object
- A pencil
- A square piece of cardboard
Measure and Cut
Start by measuring the circumference of your head using the ruler. Take note of this measurement, as it will be used later.
Next, take the square piece of cardboard and use the ruler to draw a square shape. The sides of the square should measure the same length as the circumference of your head divided by pi (π). Use the compass or circular object to create rounded corners for the top part of the hat. Finally, cut out the square shape carefully with scissors.
Create the Hat Band
Using the remaining cardboard scraps, create a long strip for the hat band. The width of the strip should be approximately 2 inches. Measure the strip to fit around the bottom part of the square shape you cut earlier and cut it to size.
Wrap the strip around the base of the square shape, securing it with glue or tape. Make sure it is tight enough to hold the hat together, but not too tight that it becomes difficult to wear.
Craft the Top of the Hat
Now, take the black construction paper or cardstock and place it on a flat surface. Place the square shape on top of the paper and trace its outline with a pencil. This will be the top part of your hat.
Using scissors, carefully cut out the traced shape from the construction paper or cardstock. Once you have the top part of the hat, attach it to the cardboard square shape using glue or tape. Ensure it is securely fastened.
Add Some Personal Touches
Your basic graduation hat is almost complete! Now, let’s add some personal touches to make it stand out.
You can attach a tassel on top of the hat using a small thread and glue. Customize the tassel by choosing colors that represent your school or adding decorative elements like beads or sequins.
Alternatively, you can also use stickers, markers, or cut-out shapes to decorate the hat based on your preferences. Let your creativity shine!
Try on Your Graduation Hat
Now that you’ve completed your homemade graduation hat, it’s time to try it on! Place the hat on your head, adjusting the hat band if necessary to ensure a comfortable fit.
Congratulations! You’ve successfully made your own graduation hat. Whether you’re wearing it yourself or giving it as a gift, this DIY project adds a personal touch to commemorate this special milestone.
