Gather Your Materials
Before you start making your denim apron, gather the following materials:
- 1 yard of denim fabric
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Pins
- Thread
- Sewing machine (optional) or needle for hand sewing
Step 1: Measure and Cut
Start by measuring the length you want for your apron. For a standard-sized apron, a length of 30 inches is recommended. Once you have determined the length, use your measuring tape and scissors to cut a piece of denim fabric to that measurement.
Step 2: Shape the Apron
To shape the apron, fold the denim fabric in half lengthwise, with the wrong side facing out. Measure 10 inches in from the folded edge on the top and make a mark. Then, measure 5 inches down from the mark and make another mark. Connect these marks with a straight line and cut along it. This will create the neck opening of your apron.
Step 3: Create the Pockets
If you want pockets on your denim apron, now is the time to add them. Cut two rectangular pieces of denim fabric, each measuring around 6 by 8 inches. Place the pockets on the apron where you want them and pin them in place. Sew around the edges of the pockets to secure them to the apron.
Step 4: Sew the Sides
With the pockets attached, fold the denim fabric in half again, this time aligning the two side edges. Pin the sides together, leaving the top and bottom open. Sew along the pinned edges, about ⅜ inch from the edge, removing the pins as you go. Your apron is starting to take shape!
Step 5: Finish the Edges
To give your apron a polished look and prevent fraying, fold and press the top and bottom edges of the apron about ½ inch towards the wrong side. Pin the folded edges in place and sew along them, close to the edge.
Step 6: Add the Waist Ties
For the waist ties, cut two strips of denim fabric, each measuring around 2 by 30 inches. These will go around your waist and tie at the back. Fold each strip in half lengthwise, with the right side facing out, and sew along the long edge. Next, turn the ties inside out and press them flat. Attach the ties to the sides of the apron, about 6 inches down from the top.
Your Denim Apron is Ready!
And there you have it! Your homemade denim apron is now ready for you to use. Put it on, tie the waist ties, and enjoy working or cooking without worrying about stains ruining your clothes. With your own creativity, you can personalize your apron by adding trims, embroidery, or other embellishments. Have fun and let your imagination run wild!
