What You’ll Need
- Fabric of your choice
- Foam or padding
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Sewing machine or needle and thread
- Pins
Step 1: Measure the Bench
Start by measuring the bench on which you want to place the cushion. Measure the length, width, and thickness to ensure a perfect fit. Write down these measurements to refer to later.
Step 2: Cut the Fabric
Using the measurements you took earlier, cut out two pieces of fabric – one for the top and one for the bottom of the cushion. Add an extra inch to each side to account for seam allowances.
Step 3: Sew the Fabric
Lay the two fabric pieces together with the right sides facing inwards. Pin them together along the edges to keep them in place. If you’re using a sewing machine, sew all three edges together, leaving one edge open to insert the foam or padding. If you prefer hand sewing, use a straight stitch.
Step 4: Insert the Foam or Padding
Turn the fabric right side out and gently insert the foam or padding through the open edge. Make sure it fits snugly but not too tightly. Once it is in place, hand stitch the opening closed using a blind stitch or use your sewing machine to close it securely.
Step 5: Add Finishing Touches
Your cushion is almost complete! Take this opportunity to add any finishing touches such as decorative trim, buttons, or a zipper closure. Get creative and make your cushion unique!
Step 6: Place the Cushion on the Bench
Finally, place your newly made cushion on the bench. Admire your handiwork and enjoy the added comfort it provides.
Making a cushion for a bench is a simple and rewarding DIY project. With just a few materials and some basic sewing skills, you can transform any hard bench into a comfortable and stylish seating option. So, why not give it a try?
