Materials You’ll Need:
- Fabric (preferably lightweight and flowy)
- Measuring tape
- Pencil or fabric marker
- Scissors
- Elastic band
- Sewing machine (or sewing needle and thread)
- Pins
- Iron
Step 1: Take Your Measurements
Measure your waist using a measuring tape. Write down the measurement as ‘Waist Measurement’.
Next, determine the desired length of your skirt. Measure from your waist to the desired length and write it down as ‘Skirt Length Measurement’.
Step 2: Calculate & Cut the Fabric
Take your waist measurement and divide it by 3.14 (pi). Round this number to the nearest inch and add 1 inch for seam allowance. This will give you the radius of your waist circle.
Lay out your fabric on a flat surface and fold it in half. At one corner, measure and mark the radius length from the folded edge. Use a pencil or fabric marker to create a quarter-circle, from one end of the radius to the other. Cut along this line.
Step 3: Create the Waistband
Measure the circumference of your waist and add 1 inch for seam allowance. Cut a strip of fabric with a width of 3 inches (or your desired waistband width) and a length equal to your waist circumference + 1 inch.
Fold the waistband in half lengthwise and press with an iron. Open it up and fold each side towards the center crease. Press again. Fold the waistband in half lengthwise once more and press.
Step 4: Attach the Waistband
Match the raw edges of the waistband with the raw edge of the skirt’s waist circle. Pin them together, distributing the fabric evenly. Sew along the pinned edge using a straight stitch, removing the pins as you go.
Leave a small opening in the waistband for inserting the elastic. Sew the remaining edges of the waistband together to form a complete circle.
Step 5: Insert the Elastic
Measure the elastic around your waist and cut it to size, ensuring it’s not too tight but snug enough to hold the skirt up.
Using a safety pin attached to one end of the elastic, guide it through the opening in the waistband until it comes out the other end. Overlap the two ends by about an inch and sew them securely together. Close the opening in the waistband with a few stitches.
Step 6: Finishing Touches
Try on your circle skirt and adjust the elastic if necessary. Make sure the length is to your liking as well. Hem the bottom of the skirt by folding the raw edge up by 1/4 inch and pressing, then folding it up again and stitching in place.
Give your skirt a final press with the iron and voilà, you’ve just made yourself a fabulous circle skirt!
