Materials You’ll Need:
- Knitting needles (size 5mm)
- Worsted weight yarn (about 800g)
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
- Stitch markers
Step 1: Cast On
To begin, cast on 100 stitches using the long-tail cast-on method. This will create the base of your sweater vest.
Step 2: Start the Ribbing
Next, we’ll work on the ribbing for the bottom edge of the vest. Knit 2, purl 2 across the first row. Repeat this pattern for the next few rows until you’ve achieved the desired length for the ribbing.
Step 3: Continue with Stockinette Stitch
Once you’ve completed the ribbing, switch to stockinette stitch. Knit the right-side rows and purl the wrong-side rows, until your work measures around 12 inches.
Step 4: Shape the Neckline
Now it’s time to shape the neckline. Start by knitting the center 20 stitches, then place stitch markers on both sides of these center stitches. Continue knitting until you reach the first stitch marker, slip the marker, and turn your work. Purl back to the second marker, slip it, and turn again. Repeat this process, knitting one less stitch before each turn, until you have 5 stitches left on each side of the center.
Step 5: Knit the Shoulders
With the neckline shaping complete, it’s time to knit the shoulder sections. Knit across all the stitches on the right side, and purl back on the wrong side, until each shoulder measures about 4 inches.
Step 6: Finish the Back
Continue knitting the back section in stockinette stitch until it measures the desired length, typically around 26 inches for a standard men’s vest.
Step 7: Shape the Armholes
For the armholes, bind off 6 stitches on both sides at the beginning of the next two rows. Then, decrease one stitch at each armhole edge on every right-side row until you have reached the desired armhole depth.
Step 8: Knit the Front
Repeat steps 3 to 7 for the front section of the sweater vest.
Step 9: Finishing Touches
After completing both the front and back sections, it’s time to sew them together. Use a tapestry needle and the mattress stitch to join the shoulder seams. Then, sew the side seams and underarm seams. Finally, weave in any loose ends and trim off excess yarn.
Voila! You have successfully knitted a men’s sweater vest. Give it a try and see the joy on the recipient’s face when they receive their one-of-a-kind, handmade garment.
Remember, practice makes perfect, so don’t be discouraged if your first attempt isn’t flawless. With time, patience, and persistence, you’ll become a knitting pro. Happy knitting!
