1) Define your goals
Why do you want to isolate yourself? Maybe you’re working on a creative project and need quiet time, or perhaps you’re going through a tough time and want to reconnect with your inner self. Whatever your reasons, make sure you have clear goals for your isolation time, so you don’t go in blindly.
2) Set boundaries
If you’re like most people, you’re used to staying glued to your phone or social media accounts. However, this kind of constant digital stimulation can sabotage your isolation plans. Set firm boundaries for yourself regarding technology use, and try to stick to them. You can decide to disconnect from social media or turn off your phone entirely. Also, avoid chatting with friends or colleagues unless it is essential.
3) Find a peaceful location
Isolation doesn’t necessarily mean you have to lock yourself in a room for days on end. Depending on where you live, you may be able to find isolated natural areas where you can sit and think. Consider visiting a remote location, taking a camping trip in a quiet location or booking a stay in a cabin or small house. Being in nature can be a great way to isolate oneself from society and gain peace.
4) Engage in relaxing activities
Instead of filling your isolation time with anything you haven’t had time for – work, exercise, hobbies – try to engage in relaxing activities that nourish your soul. Read a book, write in a journal, meditate, or take up yoga. These activities can help put your mind at ease, and help you recharge your energy.
5) Reconnect with yourself
Isolation can be a great time to look inward and reconnect with yourself, ask yourself questions like – Who am I? What makes me happy? What do I want to achieve? Take time to think about your aspirations and what you want in life.
6) Keep a journal
During your isolation, write down some of your thoughts, reflections and experiences. This will help you be more purposeful about your isolation, track your growth and move towards more clarity.
To be genuinely isolated, you have to disconnect yourself from the world actively. Understand what you want from the isolation period, set boundaries like ditching technology, and find a peaceful location. Engage in activities that nourish your soul, look inward and reconnect with yourself, and keep a journal about the experience. Isolation doesn’t have to be something that we fear, but something that we embrace with positivity and intention.
