What You Need
Before we get started, here’s a list of things you’ll need:
- An iPad running on iPadOS 13 or later
- An external monitor or an additional iPad
- A USB-C to HDMI adapter for connecting to an external monitor (if needed)
- A USB-C to USB-C cable or a Lightning to USB-C cable for connecting to another iPad (if needed)
- An updated iPadOS version (if required)
Step 1: Check Compatibility
The first thing you want to do is ensure that your iPad is compatible with the dual screen feature. To do this:
- Go to “Settings” on your iPad
- Select “Display & Brightness”
- Look for the “Screen Mirroring” option
- If the option is available, your iPad is compatible
Step 2: Connecting to an External Monitor
In case you want to connect your iPad to an external monitor, follow these steps:
- Connect one end of the USB-C to HDMI adapter to your iPad’s USB-C port
- Plug one end of the HDMI cable into the adapter’s HDMI port
- Plug the other end of the HDMI cable into the HDMI port on your external monitor
- Turn on your external monitor
- Your iPad should automatically mirror its display to the external monitor
Step 2: Connecting to Another iPad
If you wish to connect your iPad to another iPad, the process is just as straightforward:
- Connect one end of a USB-C to USB-C cable (for iPad Pro) or a Lightning to USB-C cable (for other iPad models) to the USB-C port or Lightning port of the first iPad
- Connect the other end of the cable to the second iPad’s USB-C port
- On the second iPad, a pop-up will appear asking if you want to allow the connected iPad to access your device
- Select “Allow”
- Your first iPad’s screen will now be mirrored on the second iPad
Step 3: Adjust Settings
Once your iPad is connected to the external screen(s) or another iPad, you can further customize the dual screen experience:
- To adjust the screen layout, go to “Settings” on your iPad and select “Display & Brightness”. From there, choose “Screen Mirroring Options” to adjust resolution and orientation.
- To control what appears on each screen, swipe down from the top-right corner of your iPad and tap the screen icon. Here, you can choose to have your Home screen or the app you are currently using on either screen.
- If you want to extend your workspace across both screens instead of mirroring, go to “Settings” > “Display & Brightness” and disable “Mirror Built-in Display”.
And there you have it! By following these simple steps, you can set up dual screens on your iPad and unleash a new level of productivity and multitasking. Whether you’re using an external monitor or connecting with another iPad, the possibilities are endless. Enjoy the expanded screen real estate and make the most out of your iPad!
