Why Freeze Basil?
Basil is a popular herb used in a variety of dishes. Its distinct aroma and taste can elevate any recipe to a new level. Freezing basil allows you to enjoy that freshness even when it’s not in season. Plus, it saves you from having to buy expensive store-bought dried basil that lacks the same potency.
What You’ll Need:
- Fresh basil leaves
- Sharp knife or kitchen scissors
- Ice cube trays
- Plastic freezer bags or airtight containers
- Marker or labeling stickers
Step-by-Step Process:
- Harvesting the Basil
Start by picking your basil. Choose healthy plants with vibrant leaves. Avoid any damaged or wilted leaves, as they may affect the flavor and quality of your preserved basil.
- Cleaning and Drying
Gently wash the basil leaves in cold water to remove any dirt or debris. Pat them dry using a clean kitchen towel or paper towels. Make sure they are completely dry before proceeding to the next step.
- Remove the Stems
Using a sharp knife or kitchen scissors, remove the stems from the basil leaves. Discard the stems as they don’t freeze well and can turn mushy.
- Blanching (Optional)
Blanching basil leaves helps preserve color and flavor, but it’s an optional step. If you prefer to skip this step, you can proceed with freezing the fresh leaves directly.
To blanch, briefly dip the basil leaves into boiling water for about 10 seconds, then immediately transfer them to an ice water bath. This process stops the cooking and retains the vibrant green color.
- Freeze in Ice Cube Trays
Place the basil leaves into the compartments of an ice cube tray. Fill each compartment with enough water to cover the leaves. The water acts as a protective layer and prevents the basil from getting freezer burn.
Put the ice cube tray in the freezer and allow the basil to freeze completely.
- Transfer to Freezer Bags or Containers
Once the basil cubes are frozen, remove them from the ice cube tray and transfer them to labeled freezer bags or airtight containers. Don’t forget to mark the containers with the date for future reference.
- Store in the Freezer
Place the labeled freezer bags or containers in the freezer. They can be stored for up to six months, but for the best quality, try to use them within three months.
- Thaw and Use
To use frozen basil cubes, simply take out the desired number of cubes and thaw them in the fridge or use them directly in your recipes. Basil cubes are great for soups, sauces, pesto, and more!
Now that you know how to freeze basil, you can enjoy the fresh flavors of this aromatic herb all year round. Preserve the essence of summer in your dishes and never be without the delightful taste of basil, no matter the season!
