1. Design
The design of AirPods 1 and AirPods 2 is fairly similar, making it challenging to differentiate them visually. However, there is one notable difference that you can look for to identify the second-generation AirPods. The second-generation AirPods come with an optional wireless charging case. If the AirPods you have come with a case that supports wireless charging, then you have AirPods 2. Otherwise, they are likely the first generation.
2. LED Indicator Light
Both AirPods 1 and AirPods 2 have an LED indicator light on the front of the charging case. However, there is a key difference in behavior that can help you identify which version you have. In the first-generation model, the LED indicator light is located inside the case, between the two AirPods. In contrast, the second-generation AirPods have the LED indicator light on the front of the case.
3. Pairing Animation
If you are unable to visually distinguish the AirPods based on their design or LED indicator light placement, you can rely on the pairing animation if you have an iPhone running iOS 12.2 or later. When connecting AirPods 2 to your iPhone, you will see an animation displaying the wireless charging case with the battery level indicator. AirPods 1 will not display this animation.
4. Siri Activation
Another feature that can help you differentiate between the two versions is Siri activation. With AirPods 2, you have the ability to activate Siri hands-free simply by saying “Hey Siri” without touching your AirPods. This feature is not available in AirPods 1, so if you can use this hands-free Siri activation, you have the second-generation AirPods.
While visually distinguishing AirPods 1 from AirPods 2 can be challenging due to their similar design, there are other features that can help you identify which version you have. Look for the wireless charging case, the position of the LED indicator light, the pairing animation on your iPhone, and the availability of hands-free Siri activation to determine if you own the first or second generation of AirPods. Knowing which version you have can be helpful in understanding the features and compatibility of your AirPods.
