Step 1: Choosing the right pineapple
Before you begin cutting a pineapple, you should select a fresh and ripe one. You can test the ripeness of the pineapple by smelling the base of the fruit. It should give off a sweet aroma. The skin should also be firm, yet slightly soft to the touch. The color of the pineapple is also a good indicator of ripeness. The color should be bright and sunny yellow with a few green leaves on top.
Step 2: Preparing the pineapple
To begin, you’ll need to the pineapple. Use a sharp knife to cut the top off of the pineapple. This will remove the leaves and the top of the fruit. Next, slice off the bottom of the pineapple. This will leave you with a flat base to work from.
Step 3: Cut off the skin
Place the pineapple on its side and use a sharp knife to cut off the tough outer skin. Start at the top of the pineapple and slice in a downwards motion. Cut off any remaining brown spots or tough patches that are present.
Step 4: Remove the eyes
After removing the skin, you’ll notice small, brown circles dotted throughout the pineapple called “eyes.” Use a paring knife to carefully carve out each one of these eyes. They’re tough and not pleasant to eat.
Step 5: Cut the pineapple into quarters
After removing the eyes, cut the pineapple into quarters. Carefully slice it from the top to the bottom. This will give you four fairly even wedges of pineapple.
Step 6: Take out the core
With each quarter, remove the tough center core. Slice the quarter down the center and then cut at a slight angle to remove the core.
Step 7: Dice the Pineapple
Now it’s time to dice the pineapple into bite-sized pieces. Cut the quarter into smaller slices and then cut those slices up into small pieces. Repeat this same process with all the quarters of pineapple until you have pieces of pineapple that are the perfect size for snacking.
The process of cutting a pineapple may seem intimidating at first, but with a few simple steps, the task can be accomplished in no time. By following these easy steps, the delicious sweetness of pineapple is easily accessible, making it a fantastic addition to any recipe or snack.
