Materials You’ll Need
- Pencil
- Tracing paper
- Graphite paper
- Tape
- Eraser
Step 1: Secure Your Drawing and Tracing Paper
Start by placing your original drawing on a flat surface. Next, lay the tracing paper on top of it, ensuring they align precisely. Use tape to secure both sheets in place, preventing accidental movement during the copying process.
Step 2: Trace the Outline
Using a sharp pencil, carefully trace over the lines of your original drawing. Apply consistent pressure to create a visible outline on the tracing paper without damaging the original artwork.
Step 3: Prepare the Enlarged Surface
Determine the size you want the enlarged drawing to be, and gather the necessary materials accordingly. Prepare a larger canvas, paper, or any surface suitable for your project. Ensure it’s clean and ready to be worked on.
Step 4: Transfer the Outline
Place your traced drawing onto the destination surface, using tape to secure it in place. To transfer the outline, you have two options:
- Method 1: Graphite Paper
Position a sheet of graphite paper, dark side down, between the traced drawing and the surface. Using a pencil or stylus, carefully retrace the lines of your original drawing, applying sufficient pressure to transfer the graphite onto the destination surface.
- Method 2: Window Technique
If you don’t have graphite paper, this technique can be an excellent alternative. Place the tracing paper against a sunny window, with the traced lines facing the glass. The light should enable you to see through the paper, allowing you to retrace the lines directly onto the destination surface with a pencil or pen.
Step 5: Enhance and Complete the Drawing
Once the outline is transferred onto the enlarged surface, you can now focus on adding finer details, shading, or color to complete your artwork. Take your time and use the appropriate tools and techniques that align with your creative vision.
Step 6: Remove Tracing and Refine
After you’re satisfied with your enlarged drawing, gently remove the tracing paper and any tape. Use an eraser to correct any stray lines or smudges, refining the final result and ensuring it matches your intentions.
By following these steps, you can successfully copy and enlarge a drawing, allowing you to explore more possibilities and create stunning works of art.
