Gather the Materials
- Bow stave (a straight piece of wood)
- Bowstring
- Saw
- Rasp
- Sandpaper
- Tiller stick
- Ruler or measuring tape
- Pencil or marker
- Wood glue
- Clamps
Step 1: Selecting the Bow Stave
Choose a bow stave made from a durable and flexible wood such as hickory or yew. Ensure the stave is at least 6 feet in length, 2 inches wide, and 1 inch thick. This will provide enough room for shaping and designing your bow.
Step 2: Marking the Shape
Using a ruler or measuring tape, mark the center of the bow stave. Then, measure approximately 6 inches from the center in both directions and make another mark. These marks will serve as a reference for drawing the handle and limbs of the bow.
Step 3: Shaping the Handle and Limbs
With your saw, carefully cut out the handle section based on the marked measurements. This will leave you with two long limbs on either side of the handle. Use a rasp to round the edges of the handle and limbs, creating a comfortable grip.
Step 4: Determining the Bow’s Length
Hold the bow stave vertically, with one end on the ground. Use the tiller stick to lightly press down on the upper limb while gauging its flex. Slowly move the stick towards the handle while keeping an eye on the limb’s reaction. Repeat this process for the lower limb. Determine the length of the bow by assessing the tiller stick’s position where minimal flexing occurs.
Step 5: Shaping the Limbs
Using the rasp and sandpaper, carefully shape the limbs of the bow. Focus on tapering the limbs towards their tips, as this will enhance the bow’s flexibility and performance. Aim for a smooth and symmetrical finish.
Step 6: Tillering
Attach the bowstring to both limb tips, using secure knots or bowstring nocks. Secure the bow horizontally using clamps, ensuring the string is under moderate tension. Examine the bow’s shape to identify any areas that require adjustment. Use the rasp or sandpaper to carefully modify those areas, allowing for even and balanced bending of the limbs.
Step 7: Finishing Touches
Once you are satisfied with the tiller and overall shape of the bow, remove the clamps and string. Sand the entire bow with fine-grit sandpaper to achieve a smooth surface. Apply a coat of wood glue to enhance durability and protect the wood from moisture. Allow the glue to dry completely before proceeding to the final step.
Step 8: Attaching the Bowstring
Using a bowstringer or a partner’s assistance, string the bow by attaching the bowstring securely to both limb tips. Ensure the string is properly aligned in the string nocks or knots. Make any necessary adjustments until the string sits correctly and the limbs are in a neutral position.
