Materials You Will Need:
- 1-2 wooden boards (24 inches long x 3 inches wide)
- 4 wooden dowels (12 inches long x 1 inch diameter)
- Wood glue
- Screws
- Drill
- Saw
- Sandpaper
Step 1: Cutting the Wooden Boards
Start by cutting the wooden boards to your desired dimensions. The typical dimensions for a tabletop easel are 24 inches long and 3 inches wide. Use a saw to make precise cuts, ensuring the edges are smooth.
Step 2: Creating the Base
Take one of the wooden boards and lay it flat on your work surface. This will serve as the base of your easel. Measure and mark the center of the board. Next, measure and mark two points, 3 inches from each side of the center mark. These points will be where the dowels are placed to hold the canvas. Drill holes at these marked points, making sure the holes are wide enough to fit the dowels snugly.
Step 3: Attaching the Back Leg
Take the second wooden board and position it vertically against the back of the base, forming an “L” shape. Apply wood glue along the joint where the back leg meets the base. Secure the joint further by drilling screws through the base into the back leg. Wipe off any excess glue with a damp cloth.
Step 4: Adding the Support Beam
To reinforce the easel, cut a small wooden board to the desired length, approximately 8 inches. Attach it horizontally against the back leg, around two-thirds of the way up from the base. Use wood glue and screws to secure it in place. This will provide additional stability to your easel.
Step 5: Mounting the Dowels
Apply wood glue to the drilled holes in the base. Insert the dowels into the holes, making sure they are straight and evenly spaced. Allow the glue to dry completely before proceeding.
Step 6: Sanding and Finishing
Once the glue is dry, sand the entire easel to smooth out any rough edges or surfaces. Pay special attention to the joints to ensure they are seamless. After sanding, wipe away any dust or debris. Depending on your preference, you can apply a coat of paint, stain, or varnish to protect and enhance the appearance of your easel. Allow the finish to dry completely.
Voila! Your tabletop easel is now complete and ready to hold your artistic creations. This DIY project not only saves you money but also allows you to showcase your creativity from start to finish. Enjoy your new easel and Happy creating!
