Materials you’ll need:
- Newspapers
- Cardboard or a large balloon
- Flour
- Water
- Tissue paper in various colors
- String or rope
- Crepe paper
- Scissors
- Glue
- Candy and small toys for filling
Step 1: Create the base structure
Start by cutting the cardboard into two identical shapes, such as stars, circles, or hearts. Alternatively, you can inflate a large balloon to your desired shape. Glue the two cardboard shapes together or attach them to the inflated balloon to form the structure of the pinata.
Step 2: Make the paper mache paste
In a large mixing bowl, create the paper mache paste by mixing equal parts of flour and water until you achieve a smooth consistency. For a medium-sized pinata, you will need approximately 2 cups of flour and 2 cups of water. Stir the mixture well to ensure there are no lumps.
Step 3: Apply the paper mache layers
Tear the newspapers into thin strips. Dip each strip into the paper mache paste, making sure it’s fully coated. Apply the strips to the cardboard structure, one at a time, overlapping them to create multiple layers. Continue until the entire surface of the pinata is covered, leaving a small hole at the top for filling. Allow it to dry completely, which may take up to 24 hours.
Step 4: Decorate the pinata
Once the paper mache is completely dry, it’s time to decorate your pinata! Cut long strips of tissue paper in different colors. Apply some glue to one end of each strip and attach it to the pinata, layering the strips until the entire surface is covered. You can also add crepe paper fringes to the bottom of the pinata for added flair.
Step 5: Fill the pinata
Carefully insert candies and small toys through the hole left for filling. Make sure not to overfill the pinata to avoid it breaking too soon. Once filled, seal the hole by covering it with tissue paper and glue.
Step 6: Attach the hanger
Cut a long piece of string or rope and make a loop. Attach it securely to the top of the pinata using glue or by poking two small holes and tying the ends of the string together inside the pinata.
Step 7: Hang and enjoy!
Find a sturdy tree branch, beam, or hook to hang your pinata from. Make sure the area is clear and safe for swinging! Once everything is set up, gather your guests and let the pinata fun begin. Each participant can take turns blindfolded and attempt to break the pinata open to release the surprises inside!
Now that you know how to build a pinata step-by-step, get creative and customize your designs to suit any occasion. Remember to prioritize safety while making and playing with the pinata. Have a blast at your next party!
