What You’ll Need
Before we dive into animating on Photoshop, let’s make sure you have everything you need:
- A computer with Photoshop installed
- An idea or concept you want to bring to life
- Any visual elements such as images, graphics, or illustrations
Getting Started
Once you have everything ready, follow these steps to start animating on Photoshop:
- Create a new document: Open Photoshop and go to File > New. Set the dimensions and resolution according to your desired output.
- Import your visual assets: Go to File > Place Embedded, and select the images, graphics, or illustrations you want to animate. Arrange them on different layers if necessary.
- Open the timeline: Go to Window > Timeline. A timeline panel will appear at the bottom of your workspace.
- Frame animation vs. timeline animation: Decide whether you want to create a frame-based animation or a timeline-based animation. Frame animation is best for simple looping animations, while timeline animation offers more control and options.
Frame Animation
If you choose frame animation:
- Convert layers to frames: Select all the layers you want to animate, and in the timeline panel, click the menu icon on the top-right corner. Choose “Create Frame Animation” from the dropdown menu.
- Adjust frame timing: In the timeline panel, you’ll see each frame representing a layer. Click on the duration below each frame to set the timing and create a smooth animation.
- Add additional frames: To add more frames, click on the “Duplicate Selected Frames” icon or use keyboard shortcuts. Continue this process until you have your desired animation length.
- Preview and save: Use the “Play” button in the timeline panel to preview your animation. Once you’re satisfied, go to File > Save for Web to export your animation as a gif or video file.
Timeline Animation
If you choose timeline animation:
- Create keyframes: In the timeline panel, click the “Create Video Timeline” icon. Then, move the timeline indicator to the beginning of the animation and set keyframes for each layer’s position, opacity, size, or any other attribute you wish to animate.
- Adjust timings and properties: Drag and adjust the keyframes’ positions to control the animation’s speed and duration. You can also modify each layer’s properties in each keyframe.
- Preview and save: Use the “Play” button in the timeline panel to preview your animation. To export, go to File > Export > Render Video, choose the desired settings, and save it as a video file.
