We’ve spent years the natural world undergo changes through the lens of our screens and haven’t done anything to stop it. While we’ve remained complacent, the environment has continued to degrade, affecting the planet’s inhabitants in disastrous ways. Our species has been blinded by a sort of fatalistic routine, where we watch but don’t act, even when our very survival is at stake.
One of the most pressing issues that we’ve let slip by is climate change. The weight of the evidence gathered over the years should be enough to convince us of the catastrophic effects of greenhouse gas emissions. Yet, for some reason, humans continue to emit fossil fuels into the atmosphere, increasing global temperatures and causing the ice caps to melt. Scientists have warned us of the possibility of extreme weather patterns and rising sea levels, which would harm not just our planet but also every single lifeform on it.
Another issue that we’ve been watching idly is pollution, which causes a range of illnesses. Air pollution has been known to cause respiratory diseases along with other dangerous health problems. Even with this information, we don’t do enough to reduce the carbon emissions in the atmosphere, which leads to a range of human health issues. Similarly, water pollution that results from toxic chemicals and many other pollutants has led to the death of millions of aquatic creatures.
While we’ve spent all these years watching our planet’s health deteriorate, other issues have emerged as well. For one, there’s social inequality, which is now much harder to deny. We watch marginalized groups continually face prejudice, oppression, and systemic discrimination while doing nothing to intervene. It’s incredibly frustrating to see this persist while we continue to turn a blind eye to it.
We have come to the realization that the number of people facing poverty and hunger is increasing every day. The fact that millions go to bed each night without sufficient food and water is a clear indication that something is seriously wrong. But instead of coming up with concrete ways to alleviate hunger and poverty, we continue to watch.
Are we happy watching the world burn down around us? Or are we just too scared to take any action? It’s time to realize that there’s no point in standing by and allowing these issues to keep getting worse. We need to step up and make the changes we’re capable of making.
The truth is, we’ve remained in the face of global crises because of our fear. It’s incredibly daunting to consider the weight of the responsibility that we have. But that’s not an excuse or a justification for sitting back and watching the world burn. Our inaction, our silence, and our lethargy have caused much pain and suffering. The time has come to do something about it.
In conclusion, if we’re going to make any progress towards reversing the damage that we’ve already done, we need to take an active role in the world around us. We need to become catalysts for change and act in ways that will not only protect our planet but also create a more human society. Only when we shift our focus from watching to acting will we be able to make a difference in the world and become the agents of change that we so desperately need.
