Bl. Bartolo Longo was born in Italy in 1841 and was a devout Catholic from a young age. However, in his teenage years, he became involved in spiritualism and the occult. It was during this time that he met a woman who would change his life forever: Countess Mariana di Fusco. She introduced him to the Catholic faith and guided him on the path towards conversion. With her help, Longo gave up his previous practices and dedicated himself to the Church.
One of the most significant influences in Longo’s life was his grandmother, who was an ardent devotee of the Madonna of the Rosary. She was known for her deep faith and devotion to Our Lady, and she instilled the same love for the Rosary in her grandson. Longo wrote that his grandmother was “a model of faith and a model of every virtue” and that her influence was profound.
Longo’s grandmother would take him to the Shrine of the Madonna of the Rosary, located in Pompeii, Italy. It was here that Longo had a profound spiritual experience that would lead him to devote the rest of his life to promoting the Rosary and the devotion to the Madonna. In 1875, he founded the Shrine of the Madonna of the Rosary of Pompeii, which still stands today as a place of and pilgrimage.
Longo’s grandmother was not only an inspiration to her grandson but to all who knew her. She devoted her life to prayer and works of charity, and her faith was a beacon of light to all who encountered her. Longo wrote that she was a “living witness of the grace and power of the Rosary” and that she had a profound impact on his life.
In 2015, Pope Francis visited the Shrine of the Madonna of the Rosary of Pompeii and offered a prayer to Bl. Bartolo Longo’s grandmother. He said, “Let us entrust to her intercession the intentions of families, the young, and all those who suffer.” The Pope recognized the important role that grandmothers play in families and in promoting the faith.
The devotion to the Madonna of the Rosary has been a source of comfort and hope for millions of Catholics around the world. It is a devotion that has been passed down through generations, and it is through the examples set by people like Bl. Bartolo Longo’s grandmother that its power and beauty continue to shine.
In this time of uncertainty and chaos, may we turn to the Madonna of the Rosary and seek her intercession. May we also be inspired by the example of grandmothers like Longo’s, who have shown us the importance of faith, family, and love. As we pray the Rosary, let us remember those who have gone before us, and let us ask for their continued intercession and guidance.
