Many of us have heard of the popular prayer to the Precious Blood of Jesus. This devotion to the Precious Blood of Jesus is an essential aspect of our Catholic faith. But have you ever heard of Saint Maria Pierina De Micheli, also known as the “Grandmother of the Precious Blood of Jesus”?

Born on January 11, 1890, in Milan, Italy, Maria Pierina was the third daughter of a family of seven. Her parents raised her in a deeply religious household, and they instilled a profound love for God and others in her. When she was 23, Pierina had a life-changing encounter with the Blessed Virgin Mary that would shape the rest of her life.

On the eve of December 8, 1913, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, Pierina was in the chapel of the Sisters of the Good Shepherd in Milan, where she was working as a seamstress. After finishing her work, Pierina returned to her room, where she heard a voice calling her to return to the chapel. She obeyed and saw a beautiful lady, whom she later recognized as the Blessed Virgin Mary. Our Lady showed Pierina a vision of her heart crowned with thorns, surrounded by flames and pierced by a sword. Our Lady then spoke to Pierina, telling her to promote the devotion to the Precious Blood of Jesus and wear a scapular with the image of the Precious Blood. Our Lady said, “This scapular shall be a sign of salvation, protection, and peace.”

Pierina was filled with joy upon receiving this message from the Blessed Virgin. She longed to spread this devotion and share the message that Our Lady had entrusted to her. However, Pierina’s enthusiasm was not welcomed by everyone. Many people mocked her, and her spiritual director discouraged her from speaking about her visions. But Pierina persevered, and her unfailing love for Our Lord and Our Lady sustained her.

Her message began to spread throughout Italy, and soon, people began wearing the Precious Blood scapular as a sign of their devotion. Pierina’s work took her to Switzerland, where she was instrumental in establishing a community of the Adorers of the Precious Blood. She also founded a new order of nuns called the Sisters Adorers of the Precious Blood.

Pierina spent the rest of her life tirelessly promoting the devotion to the Precious Blood of Jesus and spreading Our Lady’s message. She died on July 26, 1945, at the age of 55, and was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1985. Her feast day is celebrated on July 26.

Through the intercession of Saint Maria Pierina, may we grow in devotion to the Precious Blood of Jesus and come to a deeper love of Our Lord and Our Lady. May we recognize the great sacrifice of love that Our Lord made for us, pouring out His Precious Blood for our salvation. As Saint Maria Pierina once said, “The Blood of Jesus will be the hope of life for all humanity.”

Let us pray with her the prayer to the Precious Blood of Jesus, “Eternal Father, I offer you the most precious blood of your Divine Son, Jesus, in union with all the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, for those in my own home and within my family. Amen.”
