The movie begins with Buck Matthews coming out of jail after serving a sentence for a crime he didn’t commit. He wants to start life afresh and fix his relationship with his daughter who is now a widow. Buck’s daughter Jennifer (played by Denise Galik) feels it’s best for her and her son to move out and start fresh. However, the town of his birth was not what it used to be. A gang of bikers has made the town their stronghold, and Blade (Seymour Cassel) is their leader. Buck’s first encounter with Blade and his biker gang is when they threaten a store owner; Buck intervenes and makes them leave. This did not sit well with Blade, and he now wants Buck dead.
Gary Busey’s portrayal of Buck Matthews is one of his best roles. Buck is a man who has suffered injustice and betrayal but still retains a sense of morality and honor. Busey’s acting is raw and ferocious; he is a man on a mission to make things right. His performance is intense, and you can feel the rage building up inside him. Cassel’s portrayal of Blade is also quite good—he is a man who wants power and will stop at nothing to get it. He is intimidating and menacing, and every time he is on screen, you can’t help but feel a sense of danger and fear.
The film’s action sequences are also brilliantly choreographed, and the fight scenes are brutal and realistic. The climax of the film sees Buck taking on the entire biker gang in a final showdown, and it’s a scene that is sure to get your heart racing. The standout moment of the film’s action scenes is the epic car chase scene. Buck, together with his niece and a disabled war veteran named J.B., find themselves being hunted down by the biker gang. Their getaway vehicle is a van with the controls modified for J.B. to drive. They lead the gang through back woods and make use of dangerous terrain, sharp turns, and sheer bravery to deter the gangsters who chase them in an unstoppable car. It is a scene that showcases the biker gang’s ruthlessness and Buck’s resourcefulness.
Overall, Eye of the Tiger is a great movie that tells the story of a man who refuses to be beaten down. It’s a story of redemption, a story of a man taking back what was taken from him. What sets this movie apart from other action movies of its time is the depth of the characters and the emotional investment the audience has in the outcome. The film may have flown under the radar for most of its existence, but it’s a must-watch for fans of Gary Busey, action movies, and well-crafted storytelling.
