New Zealand is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and natural wonders, and the road from Dunedin to Te Anau is no exception. As we drive along the winding road, the expansive views of the coastline and the vast ocean beyond are simply mesmerizing. The peninsula is home to an array of wildlife, including the cute and rare yellow-eyed penguins, fur seals, and numerous bird species. A visit to the Royal Albatross Centre allows us to witness these magnificent creatures up close and personal, while also enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
Continuing our journey, we arrive at the captivating Clutha River, one of New Zealand’s longest rivers. The turquoise waters flowing through rugged canyons create a picturesque sight. For adventure seekers, jet boating along the river is a thrilling experience offering a unique perspective of the surrounding nature. Alternatively, a leisurely walk along the riverbank provides an opportunity to soak in the tranquil ambiance and admire the diverse birdlife that calls this area home.
As we travel further south, the landscape transforms into rolling farmland dotted with charming small towns. Arriving at the small town of Gore, known as the country’s capital of country music, we have the chance to immerse ourselves in the local culture and perhaps even catch a live performance by talented musicians.
Leaving behind the green pastures, our journey now takes us towards the incredible Fiordland National Park – a World Heritage site. Te Anau, the gateway to this natural wonder, captures our attention with its serene lake surrounded by mountains. This small town becomes our base for exploring the region’s stunning attractions, including the awe-inspiring Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound.
Milford Sound, often called the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” offers a surreal experience with its towering peaks, cascading waterfalls, and reflections on the calm waters. A cruise through the sound brings us face to face with its grandeur, while sighting playful dolphins and fur seals. Alternatively, Doubtful Sound, the largest fiord in the area, offers a more secluded and pristine environment. Exploring this sound on a kayak or overnight cruise allows us to truly revel in the unspoiled beauty of Fiordland.

Crossing the remarkable Clifden Suspension Bridge, one of the oldest suspension bridges in New Zealand, is an experience in itself.
