Giacomello has been creating wood products for more than 30 years, and he started experimenting with edible finishes about five years ago. He had been using beeswax and mineral oil to finish his bowls, but he was frustrated that the finishes would wear off over time.
He then discovered the Japanese technique of using a mixture of rice bran oil and beeswax to finish wood. This finish not only lasts longer, but it’s also safe to eat.
Giacomello’s edible wood bowls are made from sustainable hardwoods like maple, cherry, and walnut. They’re each unique, with different patterns and markings that are the result of the tree’s growth and the artist’s carving.
To make the bowls, Giacomello starts by selecting the wood and cutting it into a rough shape. He then uses a lathe to turn the wood into a bowl shape, using tools like chisels and gouges to create the final design.
Once the bowl is carved, Giacomello sands it smooth and applies the edible finish. This finish not only protects the bowl, but it also enhances the wood’s natural beauty.
The bowls can be used for serving food, such as fruit or nuts, or simply as a decorative piece. And when the finish wears off over time, the bowls can be re-coated with the edible finish for continued use.
While some people may be hesitant to eat from a wooden bowl, Giacomello stresses that his products are completely safe.
“The finish is food-safe and has no harsh chemicals,” he says. “I’ve even eaten off of one of my bowls myself.”
Giacomello’s edible wood products have become popular with customers who are looking for unique, eco-friendly items for their homes. He sells his bowls at local craft fairs and on his website, and he also takes custom orders.
“I love the idea of creating something that can be used and enjoyed, but also has a minimal impact on the environment,” he says.
Giacomello’s edible wood bowls are a unique and fascinating addition to the world of woodwork. They not only showcase the artist’s skill and creativity, but they also challenge our perceptions of what is edible and what is not.
So, the next time you’re looking for a new serving bowl or decorative piece, consider trying a bowl made by Terry Giacomello. You may be surprised at how delicious and beautiful wood can be.
