Step 1: Insert a Section Break
Before you can add different page numbers, you need to insert a section break to create separate sections in your document. This will allow you to customize the footer independently in each section.
- Place the cursor where you want to start a new section.
- Go to the “Layout” tab in the Word toolbar.
- Click on the “Breaks” button.
- Select “Next Page” under the “Section Breaks” section.
You’ll notice that a new page is added, indicating the start of a new section.
Step 2: Enable Different Page Numbers
Now that you have separate sections in your document, you can enable different page numbers for each section.
- Double-click on the footer area of the section where you want to customize the page numbers.
- On the “Design” tab that appears, check the box that says “Different First Page”.
- Make sure the Link to Previous option is turned off to ensure the footer is not connected to the previous section.
By selecting “Different First Page”, you allow customization of the footer on the first page of the section.
Step 3: Add Page Numbers
Now that you’ve enabled different page numbers, it’s time to actually insert them into your document.
- Click on the “Insert” tab in the Word toolbar.
- Choose the “Page Number” button, usually located in the “Header & Footer” section.
- Select the desired page number format from the dropdown menu. You can choose from predefined formats or customize your own.
- Choose the position where you want the page number to appear in the footer.
Repeat these steps for each section where you want a different page number format.
Step 4: Customize Page Number Format
If you wish to further customize the page number format, such as using Roman numerals for an introductory section or excluding page numbers entirely from a cover page, you can follow these steps:
- Click on the “Format Page Numbers” option under the “Page Number” dropdown menu.
- Choose the desired format, such as “i, ii, iii…” for Roman numerals.
- Click “OK” to apply the changes.
These steps will help you achieve the desired customization for your page numbers.
