Craig Robinson is a former college basketball coach and player. He is famously known for his tenure as the head coach of the Oregon State University men’s basketball team from 2008-2014. Robinson is also known for being the brother-in-law of Former United States President Barack Obama, being married to Michelle Obama’s older brother Craig Robinson.

Born on April 21, 1962, in DeYoung, Illinois, Robinson attended Princeton University where he played basketball as a power forward. He helped lead the Tigers to two Ivy League Championships, and in his senior year, he was named the team captain. After graduating from Princeton in 1983, Robinson played professional basketball in Europe for a few years.

After his stint in Europe, Robinson returned to the United States and began coaching. He began his coaching career in the Northwestern University Men’s basketball program for two seasons, serving as an assistant coach. After Northwestern, Robinson served as an assistant coach at the University of Illinois and then the University of Kansas. He then landed his first head coaching job at Brown University in 2006, guiding the Bears to a 19-10 record just in his second year.

In April 2008, Robinson was announced as the Head Coach for the Oregon State Beavers men’s basketball team. He inherited a program that was in shambles, as it had gone five straight seasons without a winning record, and he accepted the job with the hopes of turning the program around.

Under Robinson’s guidance, the Beavers saw a significant improvement in both their win-loss record and as a team. In the 2008-2009 season, Robinson coached the team to a 18-18 record and a bid to the CBI Tournament which was the program’s first postseason appearance in 20 years. A year later, Robinson coached the Beavers to a 14-18 record, followed by a 10-21 record in 2010-2011.

Robinson’s greatest success came in the 2011-2012 season, leading the Beavers to a 21-15 record and an appearance in the College Basketball Invitational Championship Series. However, Robinson and the Beavers could not repeat their success in the following years.

Robinson’s tenure as the Beavers head coach didn’t end the way he’d have wanted it to. He failed to produce a winning season after his team’s impressive 2011-2012 campaign, and he was fired six seasons into his role in May 2014 after posting a record of 94-105 in his six seasons at the university.

Despite his mixed records as a head coach, Coach Robinson was recognized for his efforts to rebuild the Beavers’ program. Longtime Oregonian sports reporter John Canzano wrote a piece shortly after Robinson’s firing, recognizing how he reinvigorated a program that had largely been ignored by the school; Robinson’s teams more than doubled the Beavers’ win total from the previous five years before he arrived.

Since his firing at Oregon State, Robinson worked on TV shows relating to college basketball, including ESPN coverage of the Pac-12 basketball conference.

Craig Robinson has impacted the game of basketball during his playing and coaching career. Though he left the game in 2014, one of Robinson’s lasting contributions has been his efforts to rejuvenate the Oregon State men’s basketball program. Despite his tenure appearing relatively unsuccessful on paper, he helped produce one of the most memorable seasons in program history. His influence on college basketball is felt to this day.
