In 19th-century literature, Azazel appeared in the Russian writer Nikolai Gogol’s stories as a demonic figure who grants people’s wishes but always turns them against their human authors.

Despite the various depictions across different cultures, Azazel is often associated with themes of corruption, temptation, and rebellion. It is a symbol of the devil or a demon who has been cast out of heaven by God and seeks to undermine the faith of humanity.

In modern-day pop culture, the character of Azazel has appeared in various forms. For example, in the X-Men comic book series, Azazel is portrayed as a mutant villain with teleportation abilities and the father of the famous mutant Nightcrawler. In the movie adaptation, X-Men: First Class, Azazel is shown as a member of the mutant Brotherhood working alongside the main antagonist, Sebastian Shaw.
