Alex Smith was a Scottish

Smith quickly established himself as a prolific scorer, helping the Dons win the 1965 Scottish League Cup Final with a hat-trick against Celtic. He went on to score a total of 168 goals in 317 appearances for the club, placing him fourth on their all-time scoring list.

In 1972, Smith moved on to Dundee United, where he helped the team reach the final of the 1974 Scottish League Cup. He continued to score regular goals for the Tangerines before retiring in 1976 at the age of 37.

Despite his impressive goalscoring record, Smith only won one senior international cap for Scotland, in a 1-1 draw with Czechoslovakia in 1963. However, he did represent the Scottish League XI and was part of the team that beat the English League 5-2 in 1967.

Following his retirement, Smith moved into coaching and management, starting out as assistant manager at his former club Dundee United. He later became manager of Airdrieonians, where he spent four years before moving on to St Mirren.

It was at St Mirren where Smith enjoyed his greatest success as a manager, leading the team to their first major trophy in 26 years with victory over Dundee United in the 1987 Scottish Cup Final. He also guided the team to promotion to the Scottish Premier Division in 1989.

Smith went on to manage several more clubs, including Clydebank, Falkirk, Ross County and Stenhousemuir, before retiring from management in 2000.

Despite his achievements, Smith is perhaps best remembered for his time as a player at Aberdeen, where he became a club legend. His goalscoring feats helped the team establish themselves as one of the top clubs in Scotland during the 1960s and his contribution to the 1965 Scottish League Cup win will never be forgotten by Dons fans.

In retirement, Smith remained involved in football and was often seen as a TV pundit, offering his opinions on games and players. He was also a regular at Aberdeen matches, and remains highly regarded by the club and its supporters.

Sadly, Alex Smith passed away on 30 December 2019, at the age of 80. His legacy as a great Scottish footballer and a successful manager will live on, and his contribution to the sport will never be forgotten.
