Beer has been a part of human culture for over 5,000 years and has gone through countless transformations and variations since its creation. In recent years, there has been a growing trend to revive ancient beer styles and Umbrian master have joined this movement to bring back beer flavors from the time of the Etruscans.
Twenty-one Umbrian master brewers have come together to create a new beer made with ingredients from ancient recipes. The beer will replicate the flavors of beer varieties that were popular during the Etruscan era, a civilization that flourished in central Italy from the 8th to the 3rd century BCE.
The project to revive ancient beer varieties began as a way to discover and explore Umbria’s ancient culinary traditions. The region is known for its food and wine culture, but beer is often overlooked as a local specialty. The master brewers hope to change that by using locally-sourced ingredients and traditional brewing techniques to craft unique beers that capture Umbria’s rich history.
The beer project is being led by Luca Di Vincenzo, a master brewer with over 25 years of experience in the industry. Di Vincenzo keenly showed interest in exploring ancient recipes and discovered several grains and herbs that were used in beer production during the Etruscan era. For example, the master brewers’ research uncovered a variety of Etruscan spelt which is more resilient than modern spelt and high in protein, which made it ideal for brewing beer.
The Umbrian master brewers came up with several recipes to revive different ancient beer varieties. One recipe will use barley, Etruscan spelt, hops, and wild fennel while another will use barley, spelt, hazelnuts, and bay leaves. They have also experimented with using chestnuts, lentils, and fava beans for their unique local flavors.
The revival of ancient beer varieties not only provides a unique flavor experience but also preserves the cultural heritage of Umbria. Ancient Rome also had a strong beer culture, but with the flourishing of wine and ale cultures over the centuries, this was lost. The Umbrian brewers have worked with local historians and archaeologists to gather information about traditional brewing techniques and recipes from ancient times.
The brewing process of these ancient beer varieties closely resembles traditional methods with a few additional modern adaptations that improve the final quality of the product. After the grains are hand milled and brewed, the beer is left to ferment in wooden barrels before it is bottled.
Aside from reviving beer recipes, the project has also served as a way to establish a network of brewers and create a community of master brewers with similar interests. The 21 Umbrian master brewers have worked together to revive ancient recipes and share insights into their different brewing techniques.
The community of master brewers plan to share their knowledge by hosting events where the public can learn about the brewing process and taste the beers. The project also aims to develop beer tourism in Umbria and promote the region as a destination for beer lovers.
As the beer industry continues to grow, the revival of ancient beer varieties stands out as a unique way to connect to local cultural heritage and create new, exciting flavors.
In conclusion, Umbrian master brewers have taken up a new challenge to revive ancient beer recipes, meticulously crafted, capturing the flavors of Umbria’s ancient culinary heritage. Through this project, the community of master brewers aims to establish a collection of unique beer varieties, rekindling Umbria’s forgotten cultural heritage, and showcase their brewing techniques to the tourism industry. Ultimately they hope that this initiative will inspire both beer lovers and industry professionals to reconnect with their local roots and create something special.
