One of the major changes for the Titans this offseason was the departure of offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, who left to become the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. Smith was a key architect of the Titans’ dynamic offense over the past few years, and his shoes will be tough to fill. However, the Titans moved quickly to hire Todd Downing as the new offensive coordinator. Downing has experience as an OC in the NFL, having held the position with the Oakland Raiders in 2017. He also served as the Titans’ tight ends coach last season, so he’s familiar with the team and the offensive personnel.
Of course, the Titans’ success on offense will still depend largely on the performance of quarterback Ryan Tannehill and running back Derrick Henry. Tannehill has been a revelation since taking over as the Titans’ starting quarterback midway through the 2019 season. He led the NFL in passer rating that year and followed it up with another impressive season in 2020. Tannehill has established himself as one of the most efficient quarterbacks in the league, and he should continue to thrive in Downing’s offense.
As for Henry, he’s coming off a historic season in which he rushed for over 2,000 yards and was named the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year. Henry is a rare talent who combines size, speed, and power in a way that few other running backs can match. He’s the engine that drives the Titans’ offense, and he’ll undoubtedly be a focal point once again in 2021.
Another key addition for the Titans this offseason was the signing of veteran wide receiver Julio Jones. Jones is one of the most talented receivers in the league, having amassed over 12,000 receiving yards and 60 touchdowns in his career. He was traded to the Titans from the Atlanta Falcons in June, and he’ll join a receiving corps that already includes A.J. Brown, one of the league’s rising stars. The addition of Jones gives the Titans one of the most dangerous passing attacks in the league, and should take some pressure off of Henry in the running game.
Defensively, the Titans will be looking to improve on an inconsistent 2020 season. They ranked 24th in the league in total defense, and were particularly susceptible to allowing big plays in the passing game. However, there are reasons for optimism on that side of the ball. Safety Kevin Byard is one of the best players in the league at his position, and the Titans have a young and talented group of pass rushers led by Harold Landry and 2020 rookie sensation, Kristian Fulton.
The Titans will play in one of the toughest divisions in football, the AFC South. The division includes perennial contenders like the Indianapolis Colts and the Houston Texans. The Jacksonville Jaguars also figure to be a team on the rise, thanks in large part to the arrival of number one overall pick, quarterback Trevor Lawrence. However, the Titans should be considered the favorites to win the division, thanks to their talented roster and recent success.
All in all, there’s a lot to look forward to for Titans fans in 2021. The offense will be explosive and high-powered, with Tannehill, Henry, Brown, and Jones leading the charge. The defense has the potential to be much improved, although they’ll need to shore up some of their weaknesses. If everything goes according to plan, the Titans could be a legitimate championship contender this season.
