The Kentucky Wildcats football team is gearing up for what promises to be an exciting season. After a solid 2019 campaign that saw the Wildcats finish with an 8-5 record, expectations are high for the team in 2020.
Offense
On the offensive side of the ball, the Wildcats will return quarterback Terry Wilson. Wilson missed most of last season after suffering a season-ending injury in the third game. However, the dual-threat quarterback had a strong season in 2018, throwing for 1,889 yards and rushing for 547 more.
In 2020, Wilson will once again have a strong group of receivers to throw to. The Wildcats return senior receivers Josh Ali and Bryce Oliver, as well as tight end Justin Rigg. Additionally, junior running back Asim Rose returns after rushing for 826 yards and six touchdowns in 2019.
Defense
Despite losing several key defensive players to graduation, the Wildcats boast one of the top defenses in the SEC. Senior linebacker Jamar “Boogie” Watson returns after posting six sacks and 12 tackles for loss in 2019. Additionally, senior defensive tackle Phil Hoskins and junior linebacker DeAndre Square will look to build on solid campaigns from last season.
In addition to their experienced players, the Wildcats will also welcome several key additions to their defense. Defensive end Josaih Hayes, linebacker Tre’vonn Rybka, and defensive tackle Justin Rogers are all highly regarded recruits who could make an immediate impact for the Wildcats.
Schedule
The Wildcats will open their season on September 5th against Eastern Michigan. They will then face a tough non-conference schedule that includes games against Kent State and Louisville.
In conference play, the Wildcats will face several tough opponents, including Auburn, Tennessee, and Georgia. However, they will avoid facing Alabama and LSU, two of the top teams in the SEC.
Prediction
Based on their talent and schedule, the Wildcats should be able to match, if not exceed, their eight-win total from 2019. While their offense may not be the most explosive in the SEC, they have a solid group of skill players who can make plays. Defensively, they should once again be one of the top units in the conference.
Ultimately, the key to the Wildcats’ success in 2020 will be the play of Terry Wilson. If he can return to his pre-injury form, the Wildcats could surprise some people and contend for an SEC East title. Regardless of their record, however, the Wildcats’ fans can look forward to an entertaining season of football in Lexington.
