The Browns were led by quarterback Milt Plum, who was named to his first Pro Bowl that year. Plum threw for 2,297 yards and 21 touchdowns, while only throwing 9 interceptions. He was aided by a strong rushing attack, led by Jim Brown, who rushed for 1,408 yards and 15 touchdowns.
The Browns had a tough start to the season, losing their first two games to the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants. However, they quickly turned things around with a 31-21 victory over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 3. From there, they went on a five-game winning streak, which included victories over the Washington Redskins, Philadelphia Eagles, and New York Giants.
In Week 10, the Browns faced off against the Baltimore Colts in what would be one of the most memorable games of the season. The Colts were led by quarterback Johnny Unitas, who threw for 349 yards and 3 touchdowns. Despite this, the Browns were able to keep pace with the Colts, thanks to a strong game by Plum, who threw for 272 yards and 2 touchdowns. The game ended in a 28-28 tie, which was a disappointment for both teams.
After the tie against the Colts, the Browns stumbled a bit down the stretch, losing two of their final four games. However, they were still able to secure the first place spot in the Eastern Conference, earning them a spot in the NFL Championship game against the Green Bay Packers.
The championship game was played on December 31st at City Stadium in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The Browns were faced with the daunting task of taking on Packers quarterback Bart Starr, who had led Green Bay to a 11-3 record during the regular season. Despite this, the Browns held their own, with Plum throwing for 200 yards and 2 touchdowns. However, the Packers proved to be too much for Cleveland, winning the game 37-0.
While the Browns ultimately fell short in the championship game, the 1961 season was still a successful one for the team. They had a strong offense led by Plum and Brown, and were able to weather a tough start to the season to claim the first place spot in their conference. While they weren’t able to win the championship, the Browns showed that they were a team to be reckoned with, and would continue to be a dominant presence in the NFL for years to come.
